Hi! My name is Melissa Fox. I am a freelance illustrator with some commercial experience. I prefer a pretty free form and bright style with bright colors and abstract details. I'm very interested in both concept design and illustrating books! My favorite subjects involve females, fantasy and character/monster design.
As far as my history goes, I started out drawing just like most artists: the second that I could hold a utensil. For years I dabbled in bad Sailor Moon ripoffs and other anime influences, but never planned on being serious. Through high school and my first few years of college I was introduced to many mediums I now enjoy. Clay, acrylic, watercolor, writing and inks are all things I love to work with just as much as the digital medium, though currently it seems to be my focus!
I didn't start thinking of it as a viable career until around 2003 when I was able to make a bit of money selling my -very- DIY prints and magnets at an artists collective in Portland, OR. I worked out of my upper bedroom in an amazingly colorful house of vagrants, industrial kids and clowns and had the time of my life.
However, my path took me in a different direction for a while, dropping my pencils deal with some medical complications. In 2006, though, I participated in the Landmark Forum which reignighted my passion for art. I am now actively involved in becoming a professional illustrator.
I'm planning on heading back to college in 2010 to finish up my fine arts degree and complete my foundation, but until then I'm still on my independent study.
Feel free to email me with any questions you have or things you'd like to see more of!
Thanks!
~Melissa Fox~
